Pro-Russia Paramilitary Leader Killed in Moscow Explosion

A powerful explosion at the entrance of a residential building in Moscow left Armen Sargsyan, the leader of the Russia-backed paramilitary group “Arbat” Battalion, critically injured. He was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred on Monday morning, approximately 12 kilometers from the Kremlin.

Following the explosion, Sargsyan was immediately airlifted to the hospital and placed under intensive care, but doctors were unable to save him. According to reliable Telegram sources, his bodyguard and several others were also seriously injured, with reports suggesting that at least one more person lost their life.

Russian law enforcement authorities suspect this was a well-planned assassination and are actively working to identify those responsible. Images circulating on social media show a heavily damaged entrance, with shattered windows and debris scattered across the area.

Armen Sargsyan had long been on Ukraine’s radar. In December 2024, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) labeled him a “crime boss,” accusing him of recruiting prisoners to fight in the war. The agency also claimed that he had been on an international wanted list since 2014 due to his alleged involvement in multiple murders in central Kyiv.

However, Sargsyan’s influence extended beyond the military sphere. He was also the head of the Boxing Federation of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. Confirming his death, Horlivka Mayor Ivan Prikhodko posted on Telegram, stating, “His greatest achievement was the formation and leadership of a special forces battalion.”

In recent times, there have been several attacks on individuals supporting Russia’s war efforts. Last year, a car bomb in Russian-occupied Ukraine killed a high-ranking Russian naval officer and a senior prison official. Additionally, in December, a Ukrainian security operation in Moscow reportedly resulted in the death of a top Russian military officer, according to a BBC source.

The attack has sparked fear and concern among Moscow residents, raising questions about how such an incident could occur in an area with strict security measures. Analysts believe this explosion signals a new wave of strategic assaults amid the ongoing conflict.
