Child run over, killed by battery-powered rickshaw in Dhaka
A one-and-a-half-year-old girl has died after being run over by a battery-powered rickshaw in Dhaka’s Kafrul.
The incident occurred around 4pm on Tuesday in the Ibrahimpur area, marking the second death involving an electric rickshaw in the city within two days.
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, a woman was killed after being hit by an out-of-control battery-run rickshaw in Shahbagh.
Pradip Sarkar brought the victim Mira Sarkar, his grand daughter, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after she was injured.
He said when the power went out, Mira, the only child of Nayan Sarkar, a garment factory supervisor, and his wife Pali Sarkar, was playing with other children near their house gate on Eidgah Road.
“Mira fell on the road while playing, and a speeding battery-powered rickshaw ran over her, causing serious injuries,” said Sarkar.
“She was first taken to a local hospital and then transferred to DMCH’s emergency department around 6:45pm, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.”
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue and the local police station informed of the incident, said Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the hospital police camp.
