Shah F. Athar’s Triumph at the World’s Best Awards 2024 in Singapore
The glittering lights of the Dusit Thani Laguna in Singapore set the stage for a prestigious evening as Shah F. Athar, COO of UK Curry Connect (UKCC), received an esteemed honour at the World’s Best Awards 2024. The award not only acknowledged his outstanding contributions to the UK’s hospitality industry but also highlighted his role in promoting culinary bridges between the UK and Bangladesh. The event, held on 26th September, was a gathering of talents and leaders across the global hospitality sector, celebrating excellence and cultural exchange.
A Night of Glory and Conversations
One of the memorable photos from the event features Shah, sharply dressed in a tuxedo, standing beside a golden illuminated star, capturing the pride and elegance of the occasion. Shortly after his award ceremony, Shah engaged in a phone conversation with Moslek Uddin, the CEO of UKCC and a fellow pillar of the organisation. “I am thrilled and overwhelmed. This makes all our tireless efforts worth it,” Shah expressed, overwhelmed with joy. To this, Moslek, who has over 35 years of experience in the culinary industry, warmly replied, “Shah, your achievement is a shared victory. It is a triumph for UKCC, for our team, and for everyone who believes in the unity of our catering industry”. Although Moslek was unable to attend the ceremony, his presence was felt in spirit as UKCC’s vision came to life. The ethos of “Strength in Unity” resonated deeply, capturing UKCC’s purpose – supporting the industry through collaboration, skill-building, and policy advocacy.
Shah’s Role in UKCC and the Asian Catering Industry
A second image depicts Shah standing proudly before the “Golf Charity & Awards Night 2024” banner, sharply dressed and exuding confidence. As COO and Director of Policy & Project Coordination, Shah plays a crucial role in steering UKCC’s strategies and policies, addressing the critical skill shortages and staffing challenges facing the UK’s catering industry. His work includes mentoring new chefs, shaping policies to support the industry, and fostering connections between the UK and Asian culinary communities. The award, to Shah, represents not only personal accomplishment but a collective victory for the entire industry. Reflecting on his award, Shah noted, “This is more than a personal achievement; it is a collective victory for every chef and culinary professional in the UK. Being here to represent both the UK and Bangladesh is a privilege, and it shows the strength of our culinary heritage.” UKCC has a prominent role in developing opportunities for chefs to grow and learn. The organisation’s team has competed on the world stage, winning accolades such as the Culinary World Cup 2018, with chefs bringing home medals and contributing to the UK’s culinary prestige.
Networking and New Beginnings
One of the highlights of the evening was Shah’s encounter with Her Royal Highness YM Tengku Adena, seen in a third photograph presenting him with the award. Shah, in his chef’s whites, receives the framed certificate with evident pride and humility. Speaking about the moment, Shah said,”Receiving this award from Her Royal Highness is deeply humbling. It is not just a recognition of my work but of the efforts of every chef, every culinary artist, who strives to make an impact.” Her Royal Highness commended Shah’s contributions to the industry, noting how figures like him foster unity and cultural exchange through culinary art. The night was an opportunity for chefs and hospitality professionals from different nations to network, share experiences, and build lasting friendships. “To connect with so many different talents and cultures under one roof is the true beauty of events like this,” Shah commented. “Food has the power to unite, and I am grateful to be part of that journey.” Shah’s passion for the industry and his desire to uplift others were evident as he connected with fellow award winners and organisers. “This recognition is for every chef who works tirelessly to bring flavour, culture, and joy to the table,” Shah added.
Supporting Peers and the Culinary Community
The evening also saw Shah extending support to his friend, Raja Ali, who was shortlisted for the Best CEO at the IBD Partnership Group. While Raja did not win on this occasion, Shah’s words of encouragement embodied the spirit of camaraderie within the industry. “Raja Bhai, tonight was not the night, but your dedication and vision will surely bring you that trophy soon. Keep inspiring us all.” This spirit of support and encouragement is integral to UKCC’s ethos, which believes in collective growth, strength in unity, and nurturing emerging talents in the hospitality industry.
The Journey Forward: A Farewell to Singapore and Future Plans
In the final photograph, Shah is seen holding his trophy, proudly wearing medals around his neck and standing tall in his chef’s attire. The joy and accomplishment reflected on his face capture the essence of the moment, symbolising his journey and achievements in the culinary arts. As the night drew to a close, Shah prepared for his next adventure with excitement: “Goodbye, Singapore… Next stop, Hong Kong!” Shah’s award is not just a personal milestone but a reflection of UKCC’s vision and impact. The recognition stands as an inspiration for chefs, culinary professionals, and the wider Asian catering industry in the UK.
